Letters from Dutch camp guards in Auschwitz
At least fifteen Dutch men and nine Dutch women took part in mass murder on the side of the Nazis in Auschwitz during the Second World War. Investigative journalist Stijn Reurs spent more than ten years researching Dutch people who were active in the notorious concentration camp. He identifies 24 of them in his new documentary series ‘De Nederlandse Kampbewakers van Auschwitz’ (The Dutch Camp Guards of Auschwitz). “Their families knew nothing.”
The stories of the nine female guards had been known for some time, Reurs says when asked. He had made a podcast series about them earlier. That fifteen Dutch men were also active in the extermination camp on the side of the Nazis long remained much less known.
Christel Schimmel and I contributed to the two-part documentary series by voicing letters that were discovered and used during the research. The series is available on Videoland.
